Photo Contest

Top Two Winners

Yabuli sun mountain

First Place: Gala Milne

I took this photo at the groundbreaking ceremony for Yabuli Sun Mountain, a new 5 star ski resort opening in Northeast China. W worked there for a month teaching English to local staff members and during this time, gaming tycoon Lawrence Ho came to Yabuli for 20 minutes for this ceremony. Preparation time was 2 weeks. This is a testament to the chaos I witnessed while working abroad.

Second Place: Cedric Yu

Luang Prabang monastery

We were bringing textbooks and other books that people have donated to a monastery at Luang Prabang. We then helped them set up a library; paint a room, buy and install a bookshelf, as well as set up a logging system. These monks were studying English late in the evening.

Honorable Mentions in each Category

WIL Fraser in the Workplace:

Nathan Meszaros

WIL monastery

In the summer I worked for a line painting company. My boss and some other co-workers paint the lines on the road from a big truck with a lot of machinery. Then someone puts down cones to signify that the paint is wet. 15 min. later, when it's dry, someone drives a truck and I hang out the back and pick up all the cones. We mostly work night shifts and on average for about 10 hours. If you don't mind the night shifts, it's worth the big pay!

Careers:

Joshua Weissbock

Farnham Quebec

While training in Farnham Quebec, instructors set off the remaining smoke bombs as the exercise comes to an end. Here OCdt Payne walks calmly by the smoke which is usually used to represent some sort of chemical agent that would result in soldiers having to put on their gas masks.

Community Engagement:

Emmanuel Krebs

Rwanda school

I took this photo in February 2008 while I was doing volunteer work in Rwanda. I got to visit this school in the North Province to bring them some school supplies and tell them a little about Canada.

Co-op Experience:

Daphne Nieh

Coquitlam Central Station

That was the 6:40am train at Coquitlam Central Station. We are taking the West Coast Express to downtown. All aboard!! A busy day awaits.

International Adventure:

Daniel (Chen) Shu

Oregon

In the interiors of Oregon lies the natural wonders of the Painted Hills. Part of the John Day National Monument, we drove nearly 3 hours trying to reach the destination, and during the process there were times when we lost signs of hope as the Painted Hills were nothing like the surrounding geography. The search for the Hills finally ended after 3 hours and 350 km of driving.
